FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oklahoma City, OK. – November 5, 2014 – Bud Ground, President of the Environmental Federation of Oklahoma announces that Waste Management of Oklahoma has been awarded the Frank Condon Award for Environmental Excellence for their Project “Mosley Road Sanitary Landfill Superfund Deletion”. Mr. Ground stated that this is a great example of using innovation to resolve environmental issues.
This project was innovated both from the aspect of conducting a Superfund remediation at a landfill while the landfill was operational and using a new technology not only to develop renewable fuel but to clean up air and groundwater. This technology can be transferred to other industries and applications. The key point to this technology is the ability to take dirty methane gas and economically produce renewable goods.
Peter Schultze the Sr. District Manager of the Oklahoma Disposal Operations stated that the remedial action was a first in the State of Oklahoma as well as the Country. The remediation plan allowed continued use of the facility as a disposal landfill and included using landfill gas to operate a demonstration unit that converted the gas into renewable fuels and wax. The innovative approach resulted in the clean-up of groundwater contamination and developing a new technology and the deletion of the site as a federal superfund site. The project involved the cooperation of the EPA, ODEQ and the City of OKC.
This project specifically shows how industry, community and regulatory cooperation can improve both the environment and benefit the community. Waste Management has recently entered a Joint Venture with NRG Energy and Ventech Engineers International to develop these gas-to-liquids plants in the US. Using this technology developed by Waste Management the joint venture intends to construct its first full scale facility in Oklahoma City at the East Oak Landfill.
In 1999, Environmental Federation of Oklahoma (EFO) initiated a program to honor outstanding environmental programs and/or projects by establishing the first Award for Environmental Excellence. The award is named after the late long-time EFO Board member and ODEQ Board member Frank Condon. The Frank Condon Award for Environmental Excellence recognizes member companies which have implemented innovative, voluntary, and effective environmental programs. We celebrate and honor the memory of Frank Condon with this prestigious award to a worthy company every year.
